5 Minute Makeup with Hanna

Meet our beautiful friend Hanna. She's a super-busy mom to three adorable boys (including twins!), makes everything she touches look effortless, and is a makeup genius. Seriously. The time she did mine is probably the most glam I've ever looked.

Lucky for us, today she's sharing how to apply five of her favorite products in under five minutes. The result is a gorgeous, natural look that even the most cosmetics-challenged among us (aka me) can pull off. Just watch to see how easy looking great can be--even on the most insane mornings.

Hanna's Fav Five:
Mornings are rough. At least for me they are, and having 3 young, active boys doesn't make it any easier. I always choose to sleep a tiiiiiny bit longer which turns into me frantically jumping out of bed to get ready on time. I always resort to the 5x5 method: five-minute face using just five products. It's fail-proof and seriously anyone can do it.

1. Foundation: Revlon PhotoReady
I have been loving this foundation. It isn't too heavy but gives you the option to build it up if you want more coverage. The key to this step is to pick a good quality (and quality does not always mean expensive) foundation that gives good coverage so you are not wasting time getting a flawless face.

Tip: Use a slightly damp beauty blender sponge to apply for a light dewy finish. Then apply a bit more to problem areas/dark circles. Easy peasy!

2. Neutral Eye Shadow Palette: Urban Decay Naked Palette
This bad boy is a staple in my makeup collection. It is amazing. You can create so many different looks using just this palette. That being said, there are also wonderful alternative palettes that could accomplish the same things. Just use whatever natural/neutral palette you have on hand or prefer.

Tip: Filling in my brows is a must for me. The color Buck in this palette is perfect for most brunette brows and the Naked color is great on lighter brows. So skip the extra product and fill away using one of those.

3. Blush: MAC Mineralize Blush
During the summer, I love a good shimmery rose gold blush. This is Gentle by Mac. On these get ready quick mornings, I usually always skip the bronzer and focus on a pinky cheek.

Tip: When applying blush, always remember to start at the apples of your cheek and sweep back and up towards your temples. No one likes the crazy clown look. Blend ladies, blend.

4. Mascara: L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes
My trusty Voluminous Mascara. I have tried a lot of mascaras. I mean a lot. And I always go back to this one. It lifts and separates and just gives the perfect fluttery lashes. I'd say my next favorite is the "they're real" by benefit. Also a must-have.

Tip: DO NOT pump your mascara when you go to apply it. I dries it out much faster and can take weeks off the life of your mascara.

5. Lip Gloss: MAC Lustreglass
I find that people either love MAC lipgloss or hate it. They are a tad on the sticky side, but I just love the way they look and all the fun colors. This is Flashmode, which is a MAC Lusterglass so it's super shiny. I personally love it but use whatever gloss makes you wanna pucker those babies up!

What We're Wearing: Slightly Shady

Now that the sunshine seems to be out to stay, it's time to dig through our junk drawers in an attempt to find one of the approximately five thousand pairs of sunglasses I swear I own. And yet, every single pair seems to find its way into the Bermuda triangle each year. The upside? An excuse to grab a new pair (or two...ish) for the summer. So if you're like me, and need a new set of shades, here are a few that have caught my eye - pun intended.

5 Simple Steps to a Better DIY Manicure

As much as I love going to the nail salon for a little pampering, I don't manage to find the time as much as I would like. Typically my free time starts at about 9:30pm and oddly enough, I haven't found a place open that late. (Ridiculous, right?) As a result, I'm left to fend for myself when it comes to getting my nails did done. While I don't typically do anything fancy, I've found a few simple steps help make even the most basic of manicures turn out beautifully.

Step 1: Leave them alone.
As a general rule, try to leave your nails alone as much as possible. No picking, biting, obsessive filing, cuticle cutting, etc. Lay the foundation for lovely nails by giving yourself a great foundation to work with. The less you mess with them, the less maintenance they will require. Keep your hands well moisturized to prevent hangnails and cracked cuticles.

Step 2: Practice proper preparation. 
Moisturize your hands well before removing nail polish. This will help avoid having your skin stained with remover and color. Use a non-acetone polish remover and a cotton ball or swab to remove any polish on the nails. Use a nail file to shape as desired. Wash your hands (and nails) well with soap and water. Dry well. These clean, dry nails will absorb the polish best.

Step 3: Paint (way) inside the lines.
Apply one thin coat of polish. Be sure that your polish brush doesn't have any large drips coming down the sides. Remember that it's easier to add polish than to remove large globs. Start with a single dot just above your cuticle line. Paint one line upwards to the nail tip. From the same original dot, swipe a line to the left of the center. Follow the same process on the right. The three lines should blend into a solid u-shape that is inside your nail enough to not touch any part of your skin.

Step 4: Don't forget the tip!
After one coat of polish has been applied to the nail body, swipe polish along the top edge of each nail. This will help avoid chipping from the most vulnerable part of your nail. Finish with a second (and third, if desired) coat of polish in the same three-line pattern. The second coat should help blend your tip polish in with the nail body.

Step 5: Finish strong.
Clean up any stray polish spots with a q-tip dipped in nail polish remover. Use a clear top coat on the body and tips of your nails to seal in your color and make your polish last longer.

What We're Wearing: Floppy Hats

Every Christmas, I inevitably give gifts that I end up wishing for myself. With three sisters that are pretty close in age and style, it's often items from their lists that make me adjust my own. This year was no exception. My sister Brynn had asked for a floppy felt hat from J Crew that I had to have. Sadly, as the season went on, this adorable style sold out and B unfortunately didn't forget to pack hers when she returned to school. I then started my search for the perfect floppy hat.

I found my winner while out for a friend's birthday dinner at Nordstrom. It was cute, inexpensive and hat a little extra ribbon flair to it beyond being completely basic. I love throwing it on to cover a bad hair day, keep the sun out of my eyes or just to add a little something to my outfit. Today it was perfect for keeping my head warm while playing a little soccer with Blake.

All Natural Lip Scrub

We all know how hard winter is on our skin. We've shared our favorite solution for our hands but what about the area of our bodies where the skin is most thin and often dry and chapped? Our lips are often one of the most affected areas during these chilly months. And trying to wear a deep lip color on top of dry flaky lips doesn't make for a good look. Sure, you can find several lip scrubs at any drug store or cosmetics location, but why spend the money on something you can create at home? As an added bonus, the ingredients all come from your kitchen so ingesting some won't do you any harm. Follow this simple recipe to make your lips soft and smoochable any time of the year.

What you'll need: Brown sugar, coconut oil and honey. If you're allergic to coconut oil or don't have any lying around, swap out for some olive oil.

I like to mix just small amounts of scrub at a time just to get me through rough patches (pun intended) with my lips. A tiny dollop of each ingredient is good for a couple of scrubs. If you so choose, mix 2 parts sugar, 2 parts coconut oil and 1 part honey in a larger batch to give as a fun gift or to keep a larger quantity on hand.

Press down on the ingredients with your finger and gradually incorporate everything together. Once mixed, if you decide you want a coarser texture, add a little more sugar. You can also use white sugar or raw sugar for a grittier scrub.

To use: Gently massage into lips for 60 seconds. Rinse off with warm water. Finish with your favorite lip balm.

For almost $1,000, they better be. (I couldn’t believe how many reviews these have on the Nordstrom site…do people besides Beyoncé really spend that much on shoes?)

My beautiful friend Rachel, who always looks like she’s stepped off a magazine cover, recently found some amazing Rockstud lookalikes. I couldn’t resist sharing her find, especially for $925 less than the originals.

Studs add oomph and edge to even basic outfits. Throw on a studded flat or belt and suddenly your jeans-and-t mom uniform feels a little more chic. Gotta look good cruising the aisles at Target, right?

Lingerie that's not from Victoria's Secret

Attend any bridal shower or bachelorette party and you're sure to see at least one classic pink striped box from Victoria's Secret. Why? So many people seem to think that's the only place to buy lingerie. But allow me to let you in on the secret...there are so many more options available to you online or even in stores. I know, breaking up with Vikki might sound hard, but having gone through my own separation years ago, I realize she was really just a back-stabbing (literally, underwire poking out) trashy gal that needed an upgrade in quality. And while we're still on amicable terms (I'll pop in once in a while), these other shops have become my go-to's when shopping for gifts or for myself.

Online
While buying something so personal online may sound a little strange, it opens an incredible wealth of possibilities. Since shelf space isn't an issue, there is a wide variety of colors, sizes and styles to choose from. I like picking places that have quick shipping and easy returns to make sure I can find something I love.

BHLDN
Finding tasteful lingerie in cream or white for brides is tough. Luckily, Anthropologie's bridal brand has beautiful pieces to choose from. Their robes, stockings, and undergarments have a very feminine feel with thoughtful details to make a bride feel extra special on her big day. Anthro, itself, has some lovely pieces as well in colors when you're looking for something less traditional.

Intimissimi 
Before my bridal shower, a thoughtful friend of mine was visiting Europe and brought back lingerie as a gift from this Italian brand. The fabric is so soft and the pieces are very well-made. Knowing that it came straight from Italy makes it special too. All that, and the prices are still quite affordable!

ASOS
By far, this has become my favorite place to shop for lingerie. Their selection is incredible. You can find any size, color or style you're looking for here. And their brands include everything from Agent Provocateur and Stella McCartney to French brands like Undiz and Pour Moi. With their premier membership, you get free two-day shipping and free returns despite your purchases coming from London. If you need a no-fail solution, start here.

Brick and Mortar
If you're someone who needs to see something in person, or are in a time crunch, going in to an actual retail store may be your best option. It's especially helpful if you're looking for something that's tricky in terms of sizing or if you need a salesperson to offer advice and suggestions.

Nordstrom
Nordy's offers a large range of options for your day-to-day lingerie needs. They have incredible fitters and salespeople that help you find exactly what you need (or didn't even realize you needed). If you don't have a store nearby, their online selection is great with a return policy can't be beat.

Macy's
One great thing about this department store is that you can almost always find some kind of coupon or sale to score big time in terms of value. Their selection is slightly more limited than other stores but their variation in brands leaves several options.

Boutique Shops
Living in the Seattle area means several high-quality lingerie shops to choose from. Nancy Meyer is one of the longest-standing designer lingerie retailers in the area. They're greatest selection is online, but for locals, visiting their 5th avenue location is a must. Zovo is now open in Bellevue Square which is a great option for Eastsiders. They carry brands like Chantelle, Huit and Panache. Bellefleur is also a great option, with lots of bridal lingerie to choose from.
Be adventurous and search for lingerie shops in the area you live.

So break out of the pink box and try a few other options next time you shop for lingerie! You may find that a break up was just what you needed.

Milkmaid Braids

Did anyone else think Joanna Froggatt looked absolutely stunning at the Golden Globe Awards a couple of weeks ago? With minimal makeup and a simple hairstyle, she looked perfectly sweet and sophisticated. Anna Bates would be proud.

These milkmaid braids, or a braided crown, are a go-to hairstyle for me. I can do it right out of the shower, with hair that hasn't been washed in a day or two, or even as a date night updo. It's a no-fail solution for any bad (or good) hair day.

All you need to do is braid your hair into two braids. Your length of hair will determine where you should start braiding.

What We're Wearing: Rose Gold

Rose gold first appeared on my radar a few years ago when a dear friend chose a beautiful rose gold wedding ring. I've been on the lookout for ways to integrate this feminine metallic into my wardrobe ever since. The pinkish hue is flattering on most skin tones and it's surprisingly neutral. Because it's just a little more unexpected than silver or gold, it adds something special to basic outfits (hooray!). I particularly like it paired with charcoal, black, or cream.

As if winter wasn’t rough enough, it’s also the season of dry skin. Between the cold weather and all the hand washing to ward off flu germs, my hands are often pretty parched.

The best lotion I’ve ever found is Hemp Hand Protector from The Body Shop. The smell is different from what you’re probably used to with lotions--more earthy and masculine. But it works miracles on even the most moisture-starved hands and heels. It may seem a little pricey but the tube lasts forever. Give it a try!

Brrrrrr! It's mid-January and we are certainly feeling the cold. But just because there's a chill in the air, doesn't mean we need to dress like a yeti. Investing in a nice coat will spruce up the majority of your winter outfits. It's one piece of your wardrobe that's sure to make repeat appearances at least a couple of times a week, so make sure it's something you're excited to put on as you walk out the door. I like to find coats that have an element of surprise. Whether it's an unorthodox shape, unique color or funky hardware and materials, I gravitate towards items that stand out in terms of style. For today, it's all about dressy sweatshirts. When the weather is chilly, sweatshirts are so cozy and comfortable. I love that I can wear one and still feel pretty and put-together while doing all the various exciting toddler-mom things I do during day.

I like to wear mine with comfy, not-too-skinny skinnies or boyfriend jeans and booties. And while I'm usually not much of an accessorizer, I do love adding a sparkly necklace if the sweatshirt doesn't already have some.

There's something about a classic bow that can turn the most simple of things into something lovely. It's no wonder you can find bows on handbags, gloves, tops, shoes (you get the point) everywhere these days. So why not carry the trend on to hair accessories? By placing the bow at the bottom of a bun or half bun, it makes a humdrum hairstyle a little more unique and fun. My method of getting dressed for an event (any event) mystifies and, if he's being honest, horrifies my very tidy and very logical husband. I try on every "nice" piece (anything that doesn't need ironing) in various combinations, leaving items strewn across the floor as I reject them for any number of admittedly illogical reasons. It's a painful process. I'm always going for the pretty-but-effortless look but getting there can be anything but.
